LONDON, September 7, 2020 - Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international technology and energy law firm, is once again partnering with the Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) to provide a Virtual Summer Internship Programme for twelve university-level law students across the United Kingdom that commences today.
“Owing to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has not been possible to host the students in our offices, as we normally would. Instead, we have embraced the opportunity to utilise the fantastic technology available to provide a socially-distanced programme via videoconferencing platforms with involvement from our lawyers and staff in London, Brussels, Dubai, Riyadh and New York. The virtual aspect of the scheme has given us greater flexibility to host students from further afield in the United Kingdom,” commented SJ Beaumont, Associate and Social Mobility Project Lead.
The SMF is a charity which aims to make a practical improvement in social mobility for high-achieving young people from low-income backgrounds. The current Chair of the SMF is Alan Milburn, a former Cabinet Minister and former Chair of the Social Mobility Commission, who took over the position from Sir Nick Clegg in January 2019.
“The SMF is an inspiring charity that we are delighted to be partnering with once again. Giving the right experience and training to law students who are unable to access such support, yet aspire to enter the legal profession, remains a significant hurdle – one which we are seeking to address through our work with the SMF and the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion initiative. We can only hope that our Virtual Summer Internship Programme will help support these students and inspire them to reach their goals,” commented Mark Rowley, Partner-in-Charge of Baker Botts’ London and Middle East offices.
The SMF was founded in 2005 by Linkson Jack to provide opportunities and networks of support for 16 to 17-year olds who are unable to get them from their schools or families. More than ten years on, the first students supported by the SMF have gone on to be successful in achieving degrees and graduate entry jobs.
