Making Remote Work at Baker Botts: Natalie Alfaro Gonzales

Release
The COVID-19 pandemic is having far-reaching implications on many aspects of our lives – including where we work. As offices and other organizations across the country have closed, Natalie Alfaro Gonzales has found a way to make remote “work.”

How has the transition been to working at home? What have you noticed has been harder/easier?

We recently moved into a new home and I had not set up my home office.  Once it became clear we’d be working from home for a while, I ordered a desk, a large monitor, and a wireless keyboard and mouse.  I also moved my entire setup into a spare bedroom upstairs.  Having a dedicated space away from distractions has been a game-changer.

Do you have any new ‘co-workers’ (roommates, partners, children, pets)?

My new co-workers are my husband, Chris, and my 1-year-old daughter, Carolina.  We’ve hit some fun milestones during quarantine – we celebrated Caro’s birthday with a Zoom cupcake smash, and she recently learned to walk (and run)!  Having this unexpected time to spend with her has been wonderful.

Tell us about your new office space – what do you like better, or is there anything you miss?

I do not miss the commute or the traffic, and I love being able to spend that time enjoying breakfast with my family.  I miss my standing desk and my afternoon Starbucks run with colleagues. I miss my colleagues.

Do you have a go-to activity to help you de-stress or relax?

My desk is in the same room as my Peloton bike.  I try to carve out time to jump on the Peloton or go for a walk. I definitely do not find the time to do this every day, but it always makes me feel better when I do. Caro is really loving all the family walks, and so are we.  I also try to check in with colleagues and friends whenever I can.  So many are struggling right now, so a quick “Checking in on you!” text message can go a long way.

What is your best tip for working remotely?

Set boundaries, try to stick to a schedule, and give yourself (and others) grace.

What are you binge watching or listening to now that you have time?

We jumped on the Tiger King bandwagon, but that was (sadly) short-lived.  If you haven’t seen it yet, it is quite the escape.  I’m now sneaking in episodes of Working Moms when I can, and my husband is binge watching everything on Netflix.
