GCR and Baker Botts are partnering with Stanford University’s Hoover Working Group on Intellectual Property (IP), Innovation, and Prosperity to facilitate an “in-depth investigation” into the IP and antitrust frontier at the home of the tech industry – California. The conference delves into key topics to ask questions such as what conditions under which IP facilitates invention and innovation, and what conditions under which IP confers excessive market power on particular companies?
Baker Botts antitrust Partner Michael Perry is among those speaking at the conference and his panel, “Pharmaceutical pricing and public policy,” will focus on potential antitrust and competition issues facing pharmaceutical and biotech companies amid heightened scrutiny of prescription drug prices. The panel will also discuss current enforcement trends in the pharmaceutical sector, including: Hatch-Waxman patent settlements, lifecycle management strategies, and potential abuse of the FDA regulatory process.
The full list of panels at this year’s event include:
- Is IP a barrier to entry or a source of innovation?
- Do licensing-intense industries present a challenge for competition authorities around the world?
- Pharmaceutical pricing and public policy
- International convergence – or lack thereof?
Mr. Kress and Mr. Perry are partners in Baker Botts’ Antitrust and Competition Practice in Washington, D.C., and will be available following the conference to discuss key takeaway’s from the panels and speakers.
Mr. Kress represents clients in complex private antitrust and commercial litigation and before government agencies in merger and nonmerger antitrust investigations. Mr. Perry recently joined the firm after serving as Counsel to the Director of the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition, where he was directly involved in many of the agency's most important antitrust enforcement actions.
