Stephen Weissman, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission Rejoins Baker Botts

Release

WASHINGTON, October 28, 2015 - Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international law firm, announced today that Stephen Weissman, the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will rejoin the firm as a Partner.

“We are thrilled that Steve will be coming home to Baker Botts after a successful and distinguished service as Deputy Director of the Bureau of Competition of the FTC,” said Andrew M. Baker, Managing Partner of Baker Botts.

“Given Steve’s experience as a leading antitrust lawyer and his role at the FTC, his decision to rejoin Baker Botts speaks to the caliber and reputation of our antitrust practice, which is experiencing explosive growth and demand across the globe in mergers and acquisitions, litigation, and enforcement actions,” added Mr. Baker.

Mr. Weissman started his legal career in 1994, and from 2002 to 2011 he was a partner with Howrey L.L.P. In 2011, he and a number of antitrust partners joined Baker Botts where he was a Partner until 2013, when he accepted his appointment to the FTC.

Mr. Weissman had a broad portfolio at the FTC, with all four merger review shops reporting to him as well as the healthcare and other non-merger enforcement divisions and the FTC’s regional offices in New York, Seattle and San Francisco.

Steve was involved in hundreds of merger and non-merger investigations and enforcement actions handled by the FTC over the last two years, covering a wide range of industries including energy, pharmacueticals and other healthcare sectors, consumer products, high-tech and general manufacturing. Most notably, Mr. Weissman served as the lead trial counsel in the FTC’s successful challenge to the proposed merger of Sysco and U.S. Foods in which the FTC prevailed earlier this year. He also helped to coordinate several multi-jurisdictional investigations, working closely with the European Commission and other international authorities.

Before joining the FTC, Mr. Weissman regularly was recognized by peers and clients in the Guide to World’s Leading Competition and Antitrust Lawyers, Legal 500 and regularly listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers.

“Steve is a first class antitrust lawyer and has now distinguished himself as one of the leading antitrust practitioners in the United States. His return to the firm certainly strengthens our already world-class international antitrust practice,” said John Taladay, Co-Chair of the Antitrust practice and Partner-in-Charge of the firm’s Washington D.C. office.

Upon his return, Mr. Weissman will assume the responsibilities of Co-Chair of the firm's leading Antitrust practice.
