WASHINGTON, D.C., July 12, 2011 -- International patent and trademark lawyer Mark L. Whitaker has been named chair of the International Trade Commission (ITC) practice (firmwide) at Baker Botts L.L.P. Whitaker is a partner in the firm’s Washington office.
Whitaker’s practice focuses on patent and trademark litigation counseling in the United States and around the world. He has represented a number of clients in fast-track intellectual property litigation before the International Trade Commission under Section 337 (19 U.S.C. 1337).
“Mark will manage ITC issues for the firm’s clients across practices, offices and regions in the U.S. and around the world,” said Bart Showalter, chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property department. “In today’s complex global economy, international trade issues, particularly on the patent and technology front, will present legal challenges for our clients on which Mark is well-equipped to provide thoughtful and strategic counsel.”
Whitaker began his private-practice legal career as a commercial litigator before concentrating on IP and technology matters. In addition to the mechanical arts, he has successfully represented clients in electronics, telecommunication, chemical and software process patent disputes and licensing campaigns.
Whitaker has been a frequent speaker at meetings of the Practicing Law Institute (PLI), American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Minority Corporate Counsel Association, and numerous law schools and national CLE events.
He is a magna cum laude graduate of Northeastern University and earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
