Gordon, Familant Join Baker Botts as Part of Expanded Life Sciences IP Initiative

Partners’ Careers Focus on Biotech, Pharmaceutical Patents

Release
NEW YORK, January 12, 2009 -- Jennifer Gordon and Scott Familant, who have extensive experience in complex patent matters in the life sciences, joined Baker Botts L.L.P. January 5, 2009, as partners in the Intellectual Property Department. Gordon will head up the IP Department’s Life Sciences section. Both lawyers will be based in the firm’s New York City office.

Throughout their careers, Gordon and Familant have procured, litigated and provided counsel on patents involving virtually all aspects of biotechnology, most notably litigating foundational patents in the areas of nucleic acid amplification and recombinant antibody production. Their pharmaceutical patent experience encompasses a broad spectrum, from the earliest therapeutic proteins and monoclonal antibodies to recent blockbuster drugs for lowering cholesterol and treating type II diabetes.

“Jennifer and Scott joining Baker Botts at this time demonstrates our commitment to recruiting highly-skilled individuals with extensive experience in areas where our clients are increasingly looking to us for counsel,” said Baker Botts Managing Partner Walt Smith. “With a focus on life science matters, the addition of Jennifer and Scott to our talented team of IP lawyers increases our depth of knowledge and legal expertise in the intellectual property arena.”

Commenting on the move to Baker Botts, Gordon said: “Baker Botts’ strategic focus on the life sciences and its exceptional full service intellectual property practice were very attractive to Scott and me. We look forward to working with a deep and talented bench of IP practitioners, and I, personally, am pleased to take on the leadership of the firm’s expanding life sciences IP practice.”

Prior to joining Baker Botts, Gordon and Familant were partners at Sidley Austin L.L.P. They both have advanced scientific and technical training. Gordon has a PhD in Biochemical Engineering from M.I.T. She received her J.D., cum laude, in 1985 from Fordham University School of Law. Familant earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Cornell University. He received his J.D. from The George Washington University in 1990. Both Gordon and Familant are frequent lecturers on intellectual property topics and have authored articles on a range of patent issues that impact life sciences patents.

Baker Botts has one of the nation’s largest IP teams with more than 140 intellectual property lawyers working in six U.S. offices and its London office. Most of the firm’s IP lawyers hold science and engineering degrees and are members of the patent bar. More information about the Intellectual Property Department at Baker Botts is available here.
