We encourage our new lawyers to consider different areas of practice before selecting one area of the law as their focus. Through the General Assignment Program, new lawyers may sample several practice areas concurrently. Since our departments are not divided into narrow subpractice groups, associates work with many different lawyers on a wide variety of matters. Partners supervise work assignments to assure a variety of opportunities.
New lawyers generally choose an area of concentration within the first few months of their arrival, although this time frame varies by office. After selecting an area of concentration, many associates continue working in other areas from time to time. Some associates and partners change departments after several years at the firm.
